Island: Island Life in Britian Since 1945
Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art
Saturday 21st May - Sunday 11th September 2022
This exhibition brings together a broad selection of artists to explore the notion of ‘Island’ life in Britain since 1945. The artworks in the exhibition are predominately loaned from the Arts Council Collection as part of Sunderland Culture’s three-year National Partners Programme.
‘Island’ includes work by renowned modern British photographers including Martin Parr, Chris Killip, Ingrid Pollard, Tacita Dean and Tony Ray-Jones, alongside a major new commission by John Kippin & Nicola Neate and artist-led community projects.
‘Island’ explores current debates central to the costal experience including environmental change and rising sea levels, unemployment, poverty, inadequate housing and resources, and our difficult relationship between land and sea. These concerns are presented side-by-side with romantic seascapes and documentary photography celebrating the heydays of the British seaside holiday.
Exhibited artists: Ken Baird, John Benton-Harris, John Blakemore, Shezad Dawood, Tacita Dean, Sophie Ellingworth, Hamish Fulton, Julian Germain, Derek Hill, David Hockney, Chris Killip, John Kippin & Nicola Neate, Chris Locke, Ian Macdonald, Roger Mayne, Charlie Meecham, Dod Miller, Martin Parr, Christine Pearcey, Ingrid Pollard, J.A.
