Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art

Saturday 31 January - Tuesday 26 May 2026

Bottoms is the first UK solo exhibition by Sunderland born and based artist-photographer, printmaker and researcher Dean Raymond Gooch (b. 1998).

Gooch graduated from University of Sunderland BA Fine Art in 2025, where he was nominated for the New Blood Art – Emerging Art Prize 2025, which recognises outstanding graduate artists from UK Fine Art programmes and awarded The Lizzie Rowe Award.

Bottoms showcases a new series of large photographic works, screenprints and risograph prints exploring gay identity, communities and fetish through striking imagery drawing on legacies of pop art, advertising and fashion photography. The photographs and prints are both detailed and abstracted, taking personal cues to highlight and challenge binaries and stereotypical gay imagery such as BDSM, tight worn jeans, colour coded hankies and black work boots. The images are carefully composed using props and bold colour combinations in a theatrical and playful way speaking to pride, community and solidarity in the face of continued homophobia, discrimination and violence.

Gooch plays on the age-old association of the bum in gay culture, be it through physical desire, sexual preference (tops and bottoms), or derogatory slang terms. Gooch celebrates the unbridled hedonistic joy of the bum and everything it represents.

This exhibition has been produced in partnership with University of Sunderland Fine Art and the Northern Centre of Photography.

 Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art

Saturday 31st January - Tuesday 26th May 2026

Smoke and Mirrors draws on artworks from Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art’s collection in a group show exploring contemporary landscapes through photography, painting, sculpture, film, digitally generated artwork and drawing.

The exhibition features artwork by 15 contemporary artists and photographers who challenge our understanding of landscape through digitally rendered and manipulated imagery, artificial immersive environments, and imaginative fictional worlds.

For generations landscape photographers have sought to capture the beauty and authenticity of the natural world devoid of human interference. Landscape photography has also played an important role in preserving natural environments and raising awareness of environmental concerns. However, today, nearly every landform has been impacted by human interaction, and this continues to shift our understanding of landscape. Indeed, even landscape photography has played its role in turning sites of natural beauty into tourist destinations.

The artworks on display in Smoke and Mirrors push the envelope even further creating, manipulating and reimaging landscapes exposing the artist as creator and questioning the authenticity of any pictorial landscape in the digital age. Within the exhibition lo-fi mobile phone images are turned into monumental, painterly northern landscapes, fictional cityscapes are populated with capitalist robots and mythical creatures. Crater Lake in Oregon, USA is turned into a monumental data portrait derived from the lake’s GPS coordinates, a desert landscape is reimagined as an environmentally altered crystallised terrain, and artificially constructed battlefields are used for armed training and leisure.

Smoke and Mirrors is the companion exhibition to The Skin We Live In: Portraits from the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art Collection which ran in our Main Gallery from 23 November 2024 – 2 March 2025.

Exhibited artists: Craig Ames, Tim Brennan, Daniel Brown, Joe Clark, Cornford and Cross, Chris Cornish, Jeffrey Dennis, Dan Holdsworth, Nicola Maxwell, Katja Mayer and Peter Chadwick, Mark Pinder, Chad McCail, Kelly Richardson and a new commission by James Hutchinson.

Since 2006 Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art has acquired over 500 artworks by more than 50 artists or artist collectives with a focus on, but not limited to, lens-based media and the North East of England. Today the collection continues to grow and is widely loaned across the North East of England and United Kingdom.

Past and Future Pact is a new body of work by artist Jill McKnight comprising sculpture, works on paper and video inspired by Sunderland’s industrial heritage.

The artworks were produced using art and design facilities at University of Sunderland while artist-in-residence for AA2A and DePOT (Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time) between 2023-24. The resulting body of work explores the identity of Sunderland 30 years on from mass closures across many heavy industries.

At its peak, many local industries supported one another – the mines and shipyards were supplied by satellite industries, such as ropemaking, glassworks, paintworks and metalworks – relying on each other for survival. Women played an instrumental role in Sunderland’s industrial economy, with numerous factories employing a high level of women. Several of the artist’s family were employed at Plessey’s telecommunications plant, referenced by the motif of the telephone in her ceramic works.

McKnight has brought together research from many different sources – the archives of Sunderland Antiquarian Society, the National Women Against Pit Closure 40th Anniversary Commemoration event held at Durham Students’ Union, displays within Sunderland’s museums, online groups, relatives, friends, residents and students – with their voices bringing Sunderland’s history to life engrained within the fabric of the works.

Past and Future Pact tells a story often marginalised in the visual arts, a story of female working-class labour articulated through a body of work drawn from careful research and oral accounts.

the River Wear in Robertson’s hometown of Sunderland, The Ribs Begin to Rise takes inspiration from its location. It draws on the River Wear, the post-industrial
landscape and the 700 female shipbuilders who lived and worked in Sunderland.
The exhibition reflects on Robertson’s family working-class history and the
materials key to the industries which came to define Robertson’s upbringing and
the region.

The exhibition’s title The Ribs Begin to Rise is taken from a small magazine titled Build the Ships written in 1946 telling the story of the life of a ship. Unusually, this magazine includes a photograph of women working in the shipyards during World War 2. Unlike most photography which positioned women in poses directed by the male gaze, this image shows the women unaware of the camera and working harmoniously on a monumental structure. Robertson explores gendered and bodily connections to materials, industry, and the natural landscape, touching upon queer ecologies and understandings of strength, hardness, softness and scale – combining masculinities and femininities in flux rather than being in opposition.

The Ribs Begin to Rise aims to revise how Robertson’s working-class experience has influenced their sculptural understanding and how a queer feminist lens can reframe the rigid gender associations of sculpture and industry.

Ro Robertson (they/them), (b. 1984, Sunderland, UK) is a contemporary artist based in West Cornwall. Robertson’s practice spans sculpture, drawing, painting and video, mediums through which they explore the boundaries between the human body and its environment.

Saturday 17 May - Saturday 5 July 2025

Newcastle Hospitals Charity and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art have teamed up with renowned photographer Johannah Churchill for 2025’s edition of Newcastle Hospitals Charity’s NHS Darkroom.

NHS Darkroom was launched in 2023 as part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity’s Arts Programme which aims to enhance the wellbeing and recovery of patients and staff across Newcastle Hospitals. The programme supports a range of projects across all mediums, helping to engage patients and communities in the work of the hospitals and support the mental health and wellbeing of NHS staff.

NHS Darkroom is an ongoing project with Sunderland-based photographer, lecturer and former nurse Johannah Churchill, supported by University of Sunderland, where staff from Newcastle Hospitals are invited to develop their skills and experience in photography.

For this iteration, inspired by the exhibition Come As You Really Are, Newcastle Hospitals staff have been invited to share their own hobbies, crafts or collections which bring them joy, keep them well and provide a creative outlet. Staff sat for professional portraits taken by Johannah and took part in a photography workshop to develop their own photographs of their hobbies, crafts and collections which are being displayed across Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art Collection Space and Newcastle Hospital sites.

Saturday 22nd March - Saturday 11 May 2025

“A lot of people write off places they don’t even know about” - Jan Williams – The Caravan Gallery

In March 2015, The Caravan Gallery brought their weird and wonderful photographs celebrating everyday life in Britain to Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Over a hundred colour photographs full of humour, joy and social commentary were exhibited in the exhibition Extra(ordinary) Photographs of Britain at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, then based on Fawcett Street in Sunderland.

The exhibition was accompanied by a Pride of Place Project, in an empty shop unit on Fawcett Street, devised for Sunderland by photographers Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale of The Caravan Gallery. The shop unit provided a space to host events, workshops and informal conversations against a changing backdrop of locally submitted artworks, memories and interactive activities, exploring the heritage and folklore of Sunderland. This was all supported by their trademark travelling art gallery housed in a distinctive 1960s yellow caravan.

Ten years on we are revisiting this truly unique project with a new exhibition comprised of the material generated in Sunderland in 2015. The exhibition poses the questions – How has Sunderland changed in this time? What has Sunderland gained and lost? What makes you proud about Sunderland?

The Caravan Gallery is a collaboration between artists and photographers Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale to document the reality and surreality of the way we live today. It is also a mobile exhibition space that engages with people and places “normal” galleries might not easily reach. They use colour photography to create accessible but thought-provoking images which frequently celebrate overlooked and occasionally bizarre aspects of everyday life.
